Robotics

Robotic Bulldog

The Green Robotics program began in 2017 as an exploratory unit at Green Intermediate school.  Using borrowed robots from the Louisville Library, students explored the possibilities of robotics.  From this unit clubs began to form in our elementary grades.  Since those humble beginnings our clubs/teams have grown to include programs at each grade level beginning in third grade.  All students in grades 1-8 are exposed to some form of robotics activity within our STEM programs at those grade levels.  Beginning in the 2025-2026 school year Green High School will be offering a Robotics class that students will be able to add as an elective course option.

ROBOTS USED AT EACH GRADE LEVEL

Grade 1 & 2
Vex 123
Vex 123

The Vex 123 Robot is a great entry level robot for our younger learners.  Students can program the robot using touch the touch control on the robot itself.  They can also use the coder and coder cards to begin to understand line programming. Finally, they can also use the VEXCode website to program using drag & Drop blocks right from their Chromebooks.
Grade 3
Dash & Dot
Dash and Dot

Dash and Dot have proven to be a resilient and robotic pair.  We have been using these bots for several years and they have withstood a lot of use.  They allow our students to really dive into block coding and are a natural steppingstone from the Vex 123 bots.
Grade 4-6
Vex Go
Vex go

Beginning with our 4th grade students, our program transitions to Vex robots that allow for some construction to begin.  With the Vex 123 kits students are able to build various robots and other programmable machines.  These are used in the grade 4-6 grade bands during STEM class.
Grade 7 & 8
Vex IQ
Vex IQ

Using the Vex IQ system our middle school students are able to build more complex robots and expand upon previously learned coding skills.  During STEM classes at GMS students experience many different robotic applications.

ROBOTICS TEAMS/CLUBS

Grade 3 Club Our clubs begin at the third-grade level and typically meet one day per week before school.  These students use the Dash and Dot robots and go into more detail with their programming than what is taught in the STEM classes.

Grade 4 Club The Grade 4 club gives our students the opportunity to begin more sophisticated programming using the VEX Go robot.  They are also introduced to various sensors available to the robot that can be used to perform specific tasks.  This club typically meets one day per week before or after school.  Signups for the club are offered in September each school year.

Grade 5 Team In 5th grade the club transitions into a team and we begin teaching the students how to use the VEX IQ robot.  This robot allows our students to prepare to compete in robotics competitions.  Typically, this team meets once per week either before or after school and sign-ups are available in September.

Middle School Team The Middle School team is for students in grades 6th-8th.   Students are able to try-out for a team in September.  We have a “Varsity” and “JV” teams that are formed based on the tryouts.  Students are placed on the appropriate team based on their experience and ability.  Both teams are taken to completions to measure their skills against other schools.  The JV team typically meets one day per week, while the Varsity meets two days per week.
