Robotics

Robotic Bulldog

We’ve come a long way since 2017! The Green Robotics program started with just a curiosity for technology and some robots on loan from the Louisville Library. That spark quickly turned into a flame, leading to the formation of clubs across our elementary grades.

Now, we have dedicated programs for every grade starting in 3rd, and we make sure every student from 2nd through 8th grade gets to build, code, and create in our STEM labs!  Our high school students will also be able to dig deaper into robotics with a new class beginning in the Fall of 2026.

ROBOTS USED AT EACH GRADE LEVEL

Grade 1
Vex 123
Vex 123

The Vex 123 Robot is a great entry level robot for our younger learners.  Students can program the robot using touch the touch control on the robot itself.  They can also use the coder and coder cards to begin to understand line programming. Finally, they can also use the VEXCode website to program using drag & Drop blocks right from their Chromebooks.
Grade 2-5
Vex Go
Vex go

Beginning with our 4th grade students, our program transitions to Vex robots that allow for some construction to begin.  With the Vex 123 kits students are able to build various robots and other programmable machines.  These are used in the grade 4-6 grade bands during STEM class.
Grade 6-8
Vex IQ
Vex IQ
Using the Vex IQ system our middle school students are able to build more complex robots and expand upon previously learned coding skills.  During STEM classes at GMS students experience many different robotic applications.
High School
Vex V5
Vex V5 Robot

Beginning in the 2026-2027 school year Green High School students will have the opportunity to take a robotics course as a part of their academic day.  These students will build and program robots using the VEX V5 system.

ROBOTICS TEAMS/CLUBS

Grade 3 Club Our clubs begin at the third-grade level and typically meet one day per week before school.  These students use the Dash and Dot robots and go into more detail with their programming than what is taught in the STEM classes.

Grade 4 Club The Grade 4 club gives our students the opportunity to begin more sophisticated programming using the VEX Go robot.  They are also introduced to various sensors available to the robot that can be used to perform specific tasks.  This club typically meets one day per week before or after school.  Signups for the club are offered in September each school year.

Grade 5 Team In 5th grade, the club transitions into a team, and we begin teaching the students how to use the VEX IQ robot.  This robot allows our students to prepare to compete in robotics competitions.  Typically, this team meets once per week either before or after school, and sign-ups are available in September.

Middle School Team The Middle School team is for students in grades 6th-8th.   Students are able to try out for a team in September.  We have a “Varsity” and “JV” teams that are formed based on the tryouts.  Students are placed on the appropriate team based on their experience and ability.  Both teams are taken to completion to measure their skills against other schools.  The JV team typically meets one day per week, while the Varsity meets two days per week.

High School
Team
The Green High School team will be formed out of our students who participate in the Robotics class.  These students will also participate in the VEX competition held locally, where they will be able to compete against other schools.
